On July 6, 1944 the USS Robalo was returning with her 77-man crew from her third war patrol, off Indochina. While transiting the Balabac Strait off Palawan Island, she hit a mine. Only four crew members were able to escape as she sank to the bottom. They swam to Palawan Island only to be captured by the Japanese. A note dropped to another man in the prison camp described what had happened to the Robalo. The men were later taken aboard a Japanese destroyer, and their ultimate fates are unknown.
